On Friday, TMZ stood by its assertion that the investigation is for sexual assault. A TMZ.com story said, "As we reported, a law enforcement source at the Miami PD told us Kaepernick is a suspect in a sexual assault case."

The story added: "The Miami PD also told USA Today he was a suspect in a sexual assault case -- but then backtracked and said it was for a 'suspicious incident.' "

TMZ cited a Miami Police Department official in reporting that "a rape kit was administered on the woman at the heart of the Colin Kaepernick investigation." The Herald reported the same, also citing sources.

On Thursday, Miami police spokesman Rene Pimental told the Bay Area News Group: "There's no evidence of a crime or a sexual assault. This report is simply an incident report taken at the woman's request."

Calls to Miami police on Friday had yet to be returned.

"I take great pride in who I am and what I do, but I guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up," Kaepernick tweeted.

"I want to thank all of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments. I assure you that your faith is not misplaced."

The 49ers said Thursday they were aware of the reported incident, issuing a statement from general manager Trent Baalke that said in part they were "in the process of gathering the pertinent facts."

An unnamed woman filed a report with Miami police on April 3, alleging she made drinks at an apartment for Kaepernick, 49ers teammate Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette, a former 49er and a close friend of Kaepernick. She claimed Kaepernick followed her into a bedroom, began undressing her, he left the room, they did not have sex, and she mysteriously awoke the next day in a hospital. The Miami police incident report said the woman claimed to have a previous sexual relationship with Kaepernick.

The Herald reported Friday that the woman was transported to the hospital by Miami Fire Rescue.
